Aromatherapy mattresses

Some bed manufacturers are now producing mattresses that feature aromatherapy. Different aromas are available with the likes of lavender being the most popular.

The idea behind using aromas in beds and mattresses is nothing new as the scents have the ability to mask lingering manufacturing process smells and provide relaxing aromas in themselves.

By placing the aroma in the mattress the scent is able to completely surround the sleeper in a way that it would not if some kind of dispenser were used.

How a scented mattress works

The aroma is placed within the ticking of the mattress. This means that the scent is encapsulated within the mattress body and it is constantly released in the bedroom. Most manufacturers of these aroma bedding products claim that the scents will last for a number of years.

The effects of body heat and movement may accentuate the release of the aroma and the circulation of the scent around the sleeper.

Why have an aroma therapy mattress?

Historically many fragrant plants have been used to fill pillows, to hang in a bedroom, or as potpourri. The reason is to create a relaxing atmosphere and one that is conducive to sleep.

Modern research also suggests that some aomas, like that of lavender, can have a calming effect on the nervous system which in turn helps people get a better nights sleep.

The claims of aroma therapy mattress products vary and include assisting with heartburn, poor sleep (insomnia), worry, stress and nightmares. The is of course no hard evidence to support these claims, but supporters of this kind of therapy believe in it passionately.

Anyone considering aroma-therapy bedding, but unsure of what to buy, could first try a pillow or even a bedside diffuser to test the effects of the therapy.
