Mattress care

A mattress should always be cared for and maintained in accordance with its manufacturer's instructions. Maintaining a mattress properly will extend its life.

Different care for different mattresses

Orthopedic mattresses, including those made of memory foam, latex, coil etc. have different care requirements and should not be treated identically. Do not make the mistake of assuming that the way that you treat one type of mattress will work for all – different mattresses require different care regimes and treatments.

Typical mattress care

Many mattresses benefit from regular turning, but this is not always the case, particularly in the case of multi layer mattresses and memory foam mattresses where there may be a specific surface that should be on top. Check the manufacture's care details as they may affect any warranties or product guarantees.

Some of these mattresses have specific layers aimed at providing insulation, ventilation, or base firmness, so reversing them will detract from the mattresses performance.

Many mattresses (though typically not memory foam or latex which do not support dust) benefit from vacuuming. The manufacturers guidelines should be checked first.

Mattresses and sheets can also benefit from being aired during the day (i.e. pulling the sheet or quilt back). This is true of all mattresses and bedding.

Very few mattresses benefit from being bent or folded up (although some memory foam toppers are delivered this way). Ideally, once a mattress has been positioned on a bed it should be left there unless there is a specific reason for its removal.
